HP recommends setting the SATA Controller Mode BEFORE installing the operating system. Changing the mode after installing the operating system can prevent the system from booting. You may need to have the SATA controller driver when installing a hard drive using. If you have a HP Pavilion dv6-6005st Entertainment Notebook PC, and you are installing the SATA driver from a USB FDD, then you would use the up/down arrow keys to scroll to and select the Intel(R) Mobile Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller. The dv6-6005st has the Intel HM65 chipset, not the 70. I finally narrowed it down to the AHCI driver Windows 10 installs for the AMD SATA Controller. I downloaded and installed the latest AMD chipset driver 15.7.1, but the installer doesn't update the AHCI driver. I had to manually update the driver in device manager and point it to where the installer extracted the drivers. Once I did that it.

This document describes installing native Serial ATA (SATA) drives on a computer that is using Windows Vista. Computers built for Windows XP use native-ATI technology to control hard drives, while Windows Vista uses native-Serial ATA (SATA) technology. Installing an ATI hard drive on a computer with WINDOWS Vista will cause compatibility problems.
Also, if a computer is downgraded from Vista to XP, it may display an error message that the operating system cannot locate a hard drive. If the installer cannot locate a hard drive, it cannot install the XP operating system. The BIOS on a Vista computer is configured for a native-SATA environment and it cannot recognize ATI drivers. It may be possible to override or change the BIOS settings to allow XP to recognize the hard drive. note:
If you are considering downgrading a computer from Vista to the XP Operating System, see HP Notebook PCs - Problems with SATA Drivers When Downgrading From Vista to XP

My friend handed my this laptop, yes it was a walmart laptop. He had no idea what was wrong with it, but he had removed the harddrive to replace a dead one from another laptop. So, no harddrive. After tinkering around with it for a while I finally noticed what was wrong, fixed it, replaced a bad ram chip, and vwalla. It worked.

Now I have a problem: The only harddrive I have laying around, is an extra solid state drive that I had purchased initially for my desktop. It is a Mushkin Callisto Deluxe 40GB. This laptop isn't exactly anything to write home about, but I figure it could be useful on occasion. It's got HDMI after all, that's always a perk. My HP Elitebook 2740p doesn't even have that. :/ If anything, I could use it as a net-box for my TV.

Problem starts with the BIOS. This is the most basic BIOS I've ever had the misery of dealing with. There are no actual options to toggle, so naturally there's no AHCI option. I understand that this is a walmart model laptop, but seriously.. this is just ridiculous.

Sata controller driver windows 10

Without an AHCI option, I can't install windows 7 on the ssd.

I managed to update the bios from 363F F.03 to 363F F.15.

I have used the shift+f10 menu in an attempt to diskpart.

What it comes down to, is that I can't find this dang driver. The AMD website only has an .exe format for the drivers, which basically says 'install windows, then install the drivers that you need to install windows'. I need the AHCI DRIVER.. not an EXE. Cyberlink powerdvd downloads windows 10.
