Microsoft Frontpage Server Extensions

Nov 22, 2007  Installing the FrontPage Server Extensions on IIS 7.; 9 minutes to read; In this article. By Robert McMurray. As of December 18, 2010, Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE) 2002 for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 RTM is supported by Ready-to-Run Software. There are certain technologies that FrontPage supported for rendering web pages such as Shared Borders and some kind of page counters. These things are dead. There is a file transfer protocol called Front Page Server Extensions and that is not dead, as evidenced by the fact that it is a feature in Expression Web 4.

A security issue has been identified that could allow an attacker to remotely compromise your Windows-based system using Windows Front Page Server Extensions and gain control over it. Microsoft® FrontPage® HTML Tools allow you to quickly access and modify Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) tags directly while you're editing a page in WYSIWYG view (the Normal tab in Page view). Using HTML Tools is like having X-ray vision for your Web pages.

Though MS does indeed say that FP is not compatible (MS says that versions of Office older that Office 2007 are incompatible with Win10.) , that does not mean that it will not install and run. You might be happily surprised. In my experience MS tends to discourage the use of older programs even if they will run.

Although FrontPage was not evaluated, Andre Da Costa found that core programs of Office such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Publisher back through Office 2000 work just fine on Windows 10.

Microsoft Frontpage For Windows 10

With that said if you are dependent upon FPSE then you might start looking for an alternative to FP. MS quit support of the server extensions many years ago and the number of web hosts that offer them are becoming few and far between. Eventually you should plan on them not being available and should start looking to migrate your sites to another program. Better now before it is too late.
